Sam McKnight is Vogue’s most prolific contributor. He’s worked on more covers than any photographer or model: 190 in total. He’s done more than 100 for British Vogue alone. Kate Moss (above) has a tally of 37, just to put it in perspective. But McKnight is not behind the camera, or in front of it. He’s squirrelling away in the dressing room, styling the hair of some of the world’s most famous women. Lady Gaga, Björk, Cate Blanchett, Kendall Jenner, Taylor Swift, Naomi Campbell – he’s worked with them all. He’s also the go-to man for fashion’s top designers, who call on him to craft hair for their campaigns and runway shows. He’s worked with Karl Lagerfeld for a decade and is also the master of Vivienne Westwood’s models’ tumbling tresses and feral, flyaway punkish dos.

Before I started there were only a few hair stylists who went on shoots… Now looking back, I can see that it was the beginning – both of my time, and of it all becoming a really big business.

Over his 40-year career, McKnight has helped to create some of fashion’s most iconic images; Nick Knight’s sensual, glossy campaigns for Dior during John Galliano’s tenure, Princess Diana smiling on the cover of British Vogue in December 1991, Kate Moss, hair in the most perfectly simple messy bun, silhouetted on gold for the same magazine’s December 2000 ‘Gold Issue’. He also knows how to mastermind a fashion moment. It was he who, in collaboration with Olivier Rousteing, turned Gigi Hadid into a brunette and Kendall Jenner into a blonde on Balmains AW16 runway. The now-famous hair swap was played out across the pair’s combined 90 million Instagram following.

Given the headline-grabbing potentials of hair, it’s strange to remember that, for many years, stylists like McKnight received little to no credit in magazines. In fact, before McKnight started working on Vogue shoots, all while holding down a job at Molton Brown salon, models often did their own hair and make-up. ‘Before I started there were only a few hair stylists who went on shoots. And it was very rare for them not to also have a job in a salon. Now looking back, I can see that it was the beginning – both of my time, and of it all becoming a really big business,’ he recalls. His first show was for the Emanuels, in the late 1970s, at which there were just four hair stylists in total. Today, McKnight’s team includes 35 assistants if he’s working on a 100-model-strong show; if the cast is smaller, he’ll take 15 people.
